How to find a song's BPM
To find a song's BPM, drop the audio file onto the tool above. It measures the tempo in your browser and returns a number in a few seconds, along with how confident the measurement is. Detection is most accurate on tracks with a steady, audible beat; loosely played, heavily reverbed or percussion-free music is genuinely harder to measure, which is why the tool tells you when a reading is only an estimate rather than presenting a guess as a fact.
Why tempo detection sometimes gets it wrong
Automatic tempo detection works by finding what the music repeats on. It builds an energy curve across the track, looks for the interval at which that curve best matches a shifted copy of itself, and converts that interval into beats per minute. On a track with a clear kick pattern this is close to unambiguous.
Two things break it. The first is octave ambiguity: a pulse every half second is 120 BPM, but counting every second pulse is 60 BPM, and both descriptions are mathematically correct. Detectors pick one. This tool assumes tempos under 80 BPM are more likely a halved reading and doubles them, because recorded music overwhelmingly sits between 80 and 180 — but a genuinely slow ballad can be pushed the wrong way by that same rule.
The second is music that does not keep a grid. Live drumming drifts. Rubato pushes and pulls deliberately. Ambient and classical pieces may have no percussive attack to measure at all. In those cases there is often no single true BPM to find, and any tool that returns a confident number is overstating what it knows. That is why this one reports its confidence alongside the figure.

Does my music get uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your browser and analysed on your device; it is never sent to a server. You can confirm this by opening your browser's network tab while you use the tool, or by disconnecting from the internet after loading the page — it still works.
Why did it report half or double the tempo I expected?
This is the classic ambiguity in tempo detection: a beat every half second is 120 BPM, but it is also, mathematically, 60 BPM counted in pairs. Both readings describe the same music. The tool corrects readings below 80 BPM upward because most recorded music sits between 80 and 180, but a genuinely slow track or one with a strong half-time feel can still land on the other reading. If the number feels wrong by exactly 2x, it is almost certainly this.
How accurate is it?
On a track with a clear, steady beat it is reliable to within a beat or two, and the algorithm snaps to common tempos when it lands close to one — house tracks come back as 128 rather than 127.4. Accuracy drops on live-played rhythms, tempo changes within a song, heavy reverb, and ambient or classical music with no percussion. Rather than hide that, the tool labels each reading high, medium or estimated confidence.
What audio formats work?
MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC and OGG generally work. Support comes from your browser's own audio decoder, so it varies slightly between Chrome, Safari and Firefox. If a file is refused, converting it to WAV or MP3 will fix it.
