Sound Wave Generator
Turn an audio file into a moving sound wave video. Opens on the waveform; switch to bars or radial if you prefer.
Your file never leaves your browser — the visual is rendered and recorded on your device.

How to make a sound wave video
To make a sound wave video, load an audio file above, choose a colour scheme and press Record video. The tool is set to the Waveform style: a single line drawn from the signal itself, rising and falling as the track plays. Your browser records that canvas together with the audio and hands you a video when the track ends.
Use Play first to check the look. The line is calm on sparse material and busy on a dense mix, so a solo vocal or a podcast clip reads as a gentle ripple and a full band as a dense band across the middle. Recording is real time and the tab has to stay open and visible while it runs.
What a sound wave actually shows
A sound wave is air pressure over time. Plot it and you get the familiar line that swings above and below a centre: the further it swings, the louder the sound at that instant. It does not tell you what pitch is playing, which is why a loud bass note and a loud hi-hat both look like big swings.
Because it is level over time, the waveform is also the honest view of dynamics. A heavily compressed master draws as a thick, even band, while a track with room to breathe swings between quiet and loud. Watching it can tell you something about the mix, which a spectrum will not show as clearly.
That is the difference from the spectrum styles, Bars and Radial, which plot energy by frequency and so can show a kick on the left and a hi-hat on the right. Pick the waveform when the loudness shape is the point, as with speech, an intro fade or a single instrument. Pick a spectrum style when the track has a strong beat to show.
What you get, and what you do not
You get a 1280 by 720 video at 30 frames per second with your audio, no watermark, in WebM or MP4 depending on the browser. Four colour schemes, three styles, and files up to 100 MB.
You do not get a static image of the entire waveform, adjustable line weight, or a vertical frame. If you were after the SoundCloud-style full-track picture, a DAW or an audio editor exports that, and it is a different job from a video that animates as the track plays.
Where a sound wave video is the right call
A waveform video fits when the audio is the content: a podcast clip, a spoken-word piece, an instrumental or a demo you want on YouTube tonight. Our guide to making a music visualizer compares the routes, and the audio visualizer is the same engine opened on the bars style.
For a release that people should talk about, a moving line has a ceiling. Music video vs music visualizer lays out when each is worth it, and the AI music video generator builds the full video from the same track. That one is paid, from $19/month.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a sound wave video?
Choose an audio file above. The tool opens on the Waveform style, so press Play to preview, pick a colour scheme, then press Record video. It captures the moving line and your audio together and gives you a video to download when the track ends.
Is this the same as a waveform generator?
The two terms mean the same thing to most people: a line that rises and falls with the sound. Be aware of one distinction. This tool draws the signal live as the track plays, like an oscilloscope. It does not render a static picture of the whole song's waveform, the kind you see on a SoundCloud player.
What is the difference between a sound wave and a spectrum?
A sound wave plots amplitude over time: how far the signal swings either side of the middle at each instant. A spectrum plots energy by frequency: how much bass, mid and treble there is right now. The Waveform style shows the first, and the Bars and Radial styles show the second. You can switch between them in the controls.
Is it free, and is there a watermark?
The tool is free and adds no watermark. The video is built in your browser from a canvas, so there is no server render to meter.
Which formats do I get and which audio can I use?
MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC and OGG generally load, depending on your browser. The output is WebM in Chrome and Firefox and MP4 in Safari, and the file name shows which. YouTube takes WebM directly. For Instagram and TikTok, convert it to MP4 first.
Why does recording take as long as the song?
The browser records the animation as it plays, and a live canvas cannot be fast-forwarded. A three-minute track takes three minutes, and the tab has to stay open and visible while it records.
Can I change the line thickness or make it vertical?
Not at present. The line scales with the canvas, which is a fixed 16:9 frame at 1280 by 720, and there are four colour schemes. For a vertical 9:16 cut, crop the result in an editor.
Is my track sent to a server to draw the wave?
No, nothing is uploaded. Everything is decoded, drawn and recorded on your device, and the page keeps working with your connection switched off after it has loaded.
Want something people actually share?
A waveform reacts to the track. A music video shows something. Attach your song and an AI director storyboards it scene by scene. Plans from $19/month.
