How to use the K-pop group name generator
To generate a K-pop group name, pick a concept, choose how many members the group has and press the button. You get 24 names per press. The concept sets the English vocabulary: bright and sweet draws on words like Candy and Bloom, powerful on words like Storm and Crown, dreamy on Luna and Mirage, retro on Neon and Vinyl, and elegant on Velvet and Pearl. The member count sets the numbers, so a seven-member group sees Seven and 7 in its numbered names.
Click a name to copy it and mark it as your pick. The button beside the generator then carries that name into Melodious as the start of a brief for a music video. Names are made in your browser from word lists and patterns, so the tool does not know your group's story. Use it to find a shape you like, then adjust the spelling or swap a word.
Every batch drops names that match well-known real groups. That is a safety net, not a clearance: new groups debut all the time, so check a name before you commit to it.
How K-pop group names are built
K-pop names fall into a few families, and the generator copies each of them. The first is a word with a strong image, English or Korean, which the group then fills with meaning. The second is a number with a story behind it. It is not always the member count: the group SEVENTEEN, for instance, explains its name as thirteen members plus three units plus one group. The third is a coined word, often two short syllables joined so that it looks balanced in capital letters and is easy to say in any language. The fourth is a short word plus a group noun such as Club, Squad, Unit or Crew.
Names also tend to be pronounceable by a global audience. A group that expects fans in Seoul, Jakarta, Sao Paulo and London needs a name that survives all four accents, which is why very short names and names without difficult consonant clusters are common. Look at how yours reads aloud, and ask someone who speaks neither English nor Korean to say it.
Stylisation does a lot of the work. Many groups write their name in all capitals, in lower case with an odd letter, or with a symbol. You can do the same to anything the generator gives you. Choose a style once and use it everywhere so the name looks like a brand.
Korean words used in the generator
The generator mixes in sixteen Korean words. Each one is listed here with its hangul and meaning so you know what a name says: Byeol (별) means star; Dal (달) means moon; Haneul (하늘) means sky; Bom (봄) means spring (the season); Kkot (꽃) means flower; Bit (빛) means light; Bada (바다) means sea; Narae (나래) means wings; Nabi (나비) means butterfly; Gureum (구름) means cloud; Haetsal (햇살) means sunlight; Dalbit (달빛) means moonlight; Byeolbit (별빛) means starlight; Maum (마음) means heart, mind; Mirae (미래) means future; Sori (소리) means sound.
Some are compounds. Dalbit is dal (moon) plus bit (light), and Byeolbit is byeol (star) plus bit. Romanisation is not fixed, and the same word can appear spelled differently on different releases. If you plan to use a Korean word in a real group, ask a native speaker to confirm the meaning, the tone it carries and whether it is a common name, a brand or a slang term you have not heard of.
Before you use a group name
Search it. Look for the name on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and Instagram, with and without the word group or band. Any existing artist with a following is a reason to keep looking, because you would spend years sharing search results with them.
Check the handles and the domain. A name whose handles are taken forces you to add underscores or numbers, which weakens the brand. Check them before you fall for a name.
If the group is real and will sell merchandise, search the trademark register in your country. It is free to search and it is the one check with legal consequences. Fictional groups for stories and games do not need this step.
Say it aloud, in public, to someone who has not seen it written. If they ask you to spell it, think about whether that is acceptable for you.
Frequently asked questions
How do K-pop groups get their names?
Mostly from a single image the company wants fans to remember, in English, Korean or a mix. Some names carry a literal meaning, such as a number tied to the members, and many are coined words that look good in capital letters. Companies also check that the name is free to register in several countries and that the social handles are available before it is announced.
Are these names already taken by real groups?
We filter out a hand-kept list of well-known groups, so you will not be shown TWICE or SEVENTEEN as a fresh idea. The list is not complete, and new groups debut every month, so a name that passes the filter may still belong to a group you have not heard of. Search the name on YouTube, Spotify and Instagram before you use it.
Do I need to speak Korean to use Korean words in a name?
No, but check the meaning and the spelling with a Korean speaker before you commit. The glossary on this page lists each Korean word the generator uses with its hangul and meaning. Romanisation varies, so the same word can be spelled more than one way, and a word can sound different from how it looks.
Why do so many K-pop groups use numbers?
A number is short, easy to remember across languages and gives fans a fact to repeat. It is not always the member count, so this tool lets you choose: set seven members and the numbered names use seven. If you tie the number to your lineup, remember that adding or losing a member later makes the name wrong.
Is this for a real group, a fictional one or a fan project?
All three work. People use it for fan fiction, tabletop games, roleplay, writing projects and for real independent groups. If the group is real and will release music, run the checks in the section below before you print anything.
Can I make a video for my group?
Yes. Pick a name and use the button beside the generator. It opens Melodious with a starting brief for a K-pop style music video. Add your track, review the storyboard the AI director plans, and render it on a paid plan. The brief and a first storyboard are free to try.
You have the name. Want the video?
Attach a track and describe what you want in one message. An AI director storyboards it scene by scene, with the same character in every shot. Your first project's keyframes are free, so you see the whole storyboard before deciding to render.
