How to write a Suno prompt
A Suno prompt has two parts you write separately: a style description (genre, mood, tempo, instruments, vocal) and the lyrics, with section tags such as [Verse] and [Chorus] to mark the structure. Pick a genre, mood and vocal here and you get both, ready to paste into Suno's custom mode. Keep the style short and concrete, and check the character counter in Suno's own box, because limits differ between model versions.
What goes in the style box
Think of the style box as a brief to a session band. Name the genre plainly, add one mood word, give a tempo if you care about it, list two or three instruments, and say what kind of voice you want. Putting the genre first matters because it frames everything after it; a string of unrelated adjectives gives the model nothing to hold.
- Genre. One or two terms: “modern pop”, “UK drill”, “contemporary worship”. Avoid stacking five genres.
- Mood. A single word such as uplifting, gritty, tender or dark.
- Tempo. A BPM number helps the pace land. Not sure of yours? The BPM finder reads it from a reference track.
- Instruments. Two or three that define the sound: pedal steel, 808 bass, supersaw synths.
- Vocal. Female, male, duet, or instrumental if you want no singing.
Using structure tags in the lyrics
Put a tag on its own line above each block: [Verse 1], [Pre-Chorus], [Chorus], [Bridge], [Outro]. This is a convention that many Suno users rely on to keep sections distinct, and it generally helps because the generator no longer has to guess where the chorus starts. It is a habit rather than a guaranteed instruction, so if a section comes out wrong, regenerate or move the tag and try again.
Keep lines short and consistent in length within a section. Songs sound best when the verses are similar to each other and the chorus is simple and repeats. The AI lyrics generator explains the structure and rhyme habits of each genre if you want to write the lyrics yourself.
A note on limits and what we have not verified
Suno changes its models and interface often. We could not confirm its current character limits or its handling of bracket tags from Suno's own help pages, so this page does not state them as fact. The style string defaults to a short length that fits older limits, and the counter under each box shows what you are about to paste. If Suno truncates your prompt, shorten the style first: the genre and mood do the most work.
After Suno: the music video
A Suno track is audio only. To turn it into something you can post, download the audio from Suno and add the file in Melodious. There is no integration between the two services: no account link and no fetching from a Suno URL. You bring the file, and you confirm you have the rights to it. The Suno music video guide walks through it, and the button under your lyrics carries them over as the brief.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Suno prompt?
In Suno's custom mode there are two inputs: a style of music box that describes the sound, and a lyrics box. A good prompt fills both. The style box says how it should sound; the lyrics box says what is sung and, with section tags, how the song is laid out.
What are the [Verse] and [Chorus] tags?
Square-bracket labels placed above each block of lyrics. They are a widely used convention for telling an AI song generator where sections begin, so the verse, chorus and bridge come out as distinct parts. They are not a documented guarantee, so listen to the result and adjust.
How long can a Suno style prompt be?
It depends on the model version, and we could not confirm the current numbers from Suno's own documentation, so we do not quote one. The generator defaults to a short style under 200 characters that suits older limits, offers a longer option, and shows a live character count so you can compare it with the counter in Suno's own box.
What should I put in the style of music box?
Genre first, then mood, tempo, two or three instruments and the vocal. For example: modern pop, uplifting, 118 BPM, bright synths, punchy drums, female vocals. Concrete beats poetic: say what you want to hear, not how you want it to feel.
Should I name an artist in the prompt?
It is better not to. Describe the sound (instruments, era, vocal tone) instead of naming a person, both because services may filter artist names and because a description gets you something of your own. This generator never uses artist names.
Is this tool connected to Suno?
No. Melodious is not affiliated with Suno, there is no API or account link, and we never fetch songs from a Suno link. You copy the prompt here, make the song in Suno, download the audio, and add the file in Melodious to make the video.
Does it write the lyrics too?
Yes. It drafts lyrics in the structure of your genre with the section tags already in place, from a template in your browser, or from an AI model when that layer is switched on. Edit them before you generate: a draft is a starting point.
How do I turn my Suno song into a music video?
Download the audio from Suno, then add it in Melodious with the lyrics as your brief. The AI director storyboards the song section by section, keeps characters consistent, and can put the lyrics on screen. Your first project's storyboard and keyframes are free.
Song made? Now make the video
Attach a track and describe what you want in one message. An AI director storyboards it scene by scene, with the same character in every shot. Your first project's keyframes are free, so you see the whole storyboard before deciding to render.
