Free AI Storyboard Generator for Music Videos (and Where Free Ends)

The short answer

Yes, you can get a music video storyboard from AI for free. In Melodious you upload a song, write a short brief, read a concept and then get a shot list with a drawn keyframe image for every shot, all on a free grant that can only be spent on storyboard images. What is not free is the video itself: rendering the shots into moving clips is where the paid plans start (Starter is $19 a month). The free storyboard is a one-time grant for accounts that have not paid, and it is metered, so on a busy day it can be fully booked until your next visit.

What does "storyboard AI" mean for a music video?

The short answer: Yes, you can get a music video storyboard from AI for free. In Melodious you upload a song, write a short brief, read a concept and then get a shot list with a drawn keyframe image for every shot, all on a free grant that can only be spent on storyboard images. What is not free is the video itself: rendering the shots into moving clips is where the paid plans start, and Starter is $19 a month. The free storyboard is a one-time grant for accounts that have not paid, and it is metered, so on a busy day it can be fully booked until your next visit.

Search for "storyboard AI" and the results are mostly tools for filmmakers and ad agencies: you paste a script, you get panels. That is a real job, and for a screenplay those tools are the right place to look. A music video starts from somewhere else. You have a finished song and no script, and what you need to know is what happens on the first chorus. The full song-to-video process is in how to make an AI music video.

This guide is about that version of the problem, with the money part stated up front: the storyboard is free, the video is not. If you want the wider walkthrough of how the plan gets built, how AI builds your music video storyboard goes step by step. If you would rather draw it by hand, how to storyboard a music video maps shots to song sections.

What do you get from the free storyboard?

Four things, in order:

StepWhat it isFree?
BriefA short form that asks only what would change your video: who is on screen, the place, the look, the shape of the story. You can answer, or press "Decide for me".Yes
ConceptA logline, one beat per section of the song and the key look decisions, which you can revise.Yes
Shot listNumbered shots, each with a title, a written prompt and a duration. The durations add up to the length you chose.Yes
KeyframesOne drawn image per shot, in the shape you chose (16:9 or vertical 9:16).Yes, from a one-time grant

Two things sit on top. First, the shot list is written against your audio, not a blank page: Melodious analyses the track for tempo, sections and lyrics, so the cut speed and the shot content follow the song. Second, you can play a free rough cut, the stills laid against your song, which is the quickest way to judge whether the pacing is right before spending anything.

What you do not get is movement. A keyframe is a still image. The clips, the lip sync and the finished file all come from the render step.

The free brief and concept

Where does free stop?

At the Render video button. Everything before it runs on the free tier; pressing it shows the exact credit price for the shots you have approved and a plan picker.

The numbers behind that, from our own pricing:

  • The free grant is 72 credits, spendable only on keyframes and never on a render. A 30-second storyboard's keyframes cost about 48 credits, which leaves room for a few redraws.
  • A 30-second render at 720p is about 552 credits.
  • Plans are subscriptions: Starter $19 a month, Artist $97, Label $147. Starter is described on the plan card as about 35 seconds of HD video a month, so one short video.

So a first video costs a month of Starter. If that is not what you want to spend, you can still keep the storyboard: it is a usable plan for a shoot, a freelancer or another tool. For the full cost picture across all the ways of making a video, what an AI music video costs lays out the numbers.

What are the limits of the free tier?

We would rather you hear them here than hit them mid-session:

  • It is metered, not unlimited. An account that has never paid gets a small number of free projects, and the brief, the concept and the shot list have per-project allowances. At the time of writing that is three free projects, three rounds of follow-up questions per brief, one concept write plus two revisions, and two storyboard plans per project.
  • It can sell out. On a very busy day the free storyboards can be fully booked. The studio says so, your brief stays free, and your free storyboard unlocks on your next visit.
  • It needs a confirmed email. Disposable email domains are refused at signup.
  • It cannot fund a render. If you later subscribe and render, any unspent free grant is subtracted from what the render would cost, so the free credits are never stacked on top of a paid video.

These limits are set in the product's configuration and can change; the studio shows what applies to you.

How do you get a better storyboard out of it?

The storyboard is only as specific as the brief. Three habits make the difference:

  1. Name one thing a camera can point at. "A girl on a night bus, headphones in" gives the planner a subject, a place and a mood. "Emotional and cinematic" gives it nothing. The detail on writing this is in how to write a brief for your AI music video director.
  2. Pick the length and the part of the song first. A 30-second storyboard of the first chorus is cheaper to judge than a full-song plan, and you can always rebuild at a longer length once you like the look.
  3. Judge the stills, not the idea. Read every keyframe for the same face, the same wardrobe and the same light. If the person changes between shots, tighten the brief or save them as a reusable character before you pay for motion.

How does it compare with other free storyboard generators?

Most free storyboard generators are built for scripts or text prompts and still scenes, not songs. As of 2026-10-06, Magic Hour's free tier, for example, needs no sign-up and gives 3 storyboard generations a day of 4 panels by default, per its own guide; Boords and Storyboarder.ai are script-first, and Adobe Firefly Boards is a prompt-driven ideation canvas, going by their own descriptions. None of those reads an audio file for tempo, sections and lyrics.

When is a different storyboard tool the better choice?

Be honest about the fit. If you have a screenplay, a commercial script or a client who needs to sign off on panels, a script-first tool is built for that. Boords and Storyboarder.ai describe themselves that way as of 2026-10-05, Firefly Boards suits moodboarding a look, and some have free tiers of their own. If you want a hand-drawn board for a live-action shoot, pen and paper or a template will beat any generator.

Melodious earns its place when the input is a song, you want shots matched to its structure, and you might want the finished video from the same place. If that is you, the storyboard costs nothing to try.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI storyboard really free?

Yes, with limits. A confirmed account that has never paid gets a one-time grant of 72 credits that can be spent only on storyboard keyframe images, plus a free brief and concept. At the time of writing that is three free projects and two storyboard plans per project, with a capped number of edits, and on a very busy day free storyboards can be fully booked, in which case the studio tells you and your grant unlocks on your next visit. The grant cannot pay for a video render.

What do I get at the end of the free storyboard?

A numbered shot list written against your song, with a title, a written prompt and a duration for each shot, and a drawn keyframe image for each shot. You also get the concept behind it: a logline, one beat per section of the song and the key look decisions. There is a free rough cut, which is the stills played against the song, so you can feel the pacing. There is no moving video until you render.

Where exactly does the paywall sit?

At Render video. Everything before it, meaning the brief, the concept, the shot list and the keyframes, is covered by the free tier. When you press Render video, you see the exact credit price for the shots you have approved and a plan picker. Subscriptions are Starter at $19 a month, Artist at $97 and Label at $147, and there is no separate one-off video price.

How is this different from Boords, Storyboarder.ai or Adobe Firefly?

Going by their own descriptions as of 2026-10-05, Boords and Storyboarder.ai turn a script into a storyboard, and Adobe Firefly Boards is an ideation canvas for references, images and video built from text prompts. None starts from an audio file. Melodious starts from your audio file: it reads the tempo, the sections and the lyrics, and writes the shots against them, then connects the storyboard to a video render. If you need scene-by-scene panels from a screenplay, a script-first tool is the better fit.

Can I edit the storyboard after the AI writes it?

Yes. Each shot has its own prompt and duration, and you can change a shot and redraw its keyframe. On the free tier the redraws are capped: a free project allows two storyboard plans and a fixed number of edits, and the free grant has room for roughly one to three keyframe redraws beyond the first draw of a 30-second storyboard.

Does the free storyboard work for any song?

It works from an audio file you upload, so a studio master, a DAW bounce or a track from an AI music tool all work the same way. Instrumentals work too, but you get no lyric lines to anchor shots to. Keep the first storyboard to the part of the song you want a video for; the brief asks you to choose a length of 16 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds or the full song.
