Can You Use Suno Songs Commercially? What Each Plan Allows

By The Melodious Team

The short answer

Suno commercial use depends on your plan and on how the file left Suno. Suno's terms say free and Basic users may use Outputs only for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes. Suno's terms assign Pro and Premier subscribers its rights in Output it owns, and they may commercially exploit a song they obtained through a permitted download. Since September 3, 2026 downloads are capped: 7 lifetime trial downloads on Free with no commercial rights, 20 a month on Pro and 60 on Premier. Remixes stay non-commercial on every plan. This is a summary of Suno's published terms as of 2026-10-05, not legal advice.

Can you use Suno songs commercially?

The short answer: Suno commercial use depends on your plan and on how the file left Suno. Suno's terms say free and Basic users may use Outputs only for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes. Suno's terms assign Pro and Premier subscribers its rights in Output it owns, and they may commercially exploit a song they obtained through a permitted download. If you are about to put a Suno song under a music video and upload it somewhere that pays, this is the page to read first. Everything below comes from Suno's own Terms of Service (last revised August 10, 2026, effective September 3, 2026), its help article Do I have the copyrights to songs I made? and its Upcoming Changes FAQ. Terms change, so read the live versions before you release anything. Neither Suno nor Melodious is giving you legal advice here, and Melodious is not affiliated with Suno. For the video side, see how to turn your Suno song into a music video.

What does each Suno plan allow?

The download numbers and WAV availability come from Suno's September 2026 FAQ and its file types article. Suno's FAQ says one song counts as one download regardless of format, that re-downloading the same song does not count again, and that unused monthly downloads do not roll over. It also says you can buy more downloads if you hit the limit.

Why the download matters more than the plan

The line most people miss is in the "Permitted Commercial Use" section. Suno's terms say you may commercially exploit Output "solely to the extent it adheres to Suno's Conditions of Access and Use" and only if you have obtained a permitted download, and that you may not commercially exploit Output you have not downloaded through an approved channel. The same section says that obtaining a copy any other way is prohibited, and gives two examples: recording and stream ripping.

On our reading, a Pro subscription is not a blanket license over everything you ever generated: the grant is written around downloads taken inside your allowance. The terms prohibit recording and stream ripping outright, so a screen-recorded copy is outside them whatever plan the account is on.

Two further points from the same terms:

  • Do not strip the marking. You agree not to remove, alter, obscure or circumvent any fingerprint, watermark or metadata Suno appends to an Output to hide its provenance, tier or status.
  • Light editing. The terms say you may edit, process or convert the format of an Output you are otherwise permitted to use, to the extent such use is incidental. They do not define "incidental" or list examples, so if your use goes beyond a trim or a format change, ask Suno.

Suno's help page draws the line itself. On Basic, Suno is the owner and you may use songs non-commercially. On Pro or Premier you own the songs you make while subscribed. The page then adds that in both cases the material may not be eligible for copyright protection, because in the US copyright laws protect material created by a human, and that writing the prompt does not constitute creating the song.

The terms say the same thing in legal language: Suno assigns you its rights in the Output, with no representation or warranty that any copyright will vest in it. In practice:

  • If you wrote the lyrics, the help page says you own those lyrics and may be able to register them, and that some registrars may recognize you as the writer with Suno as an instrument.
  • If the song is entirely generated, expect that you hold a contractual right to use it but may have no copyright to enforce against someone who copies it.
  • The help page also warns that some distributors exclude songs that are not eligible for copyright protection, and recommends researching several and reading their terms.

That last point is separate from anything in Suno's terms, and it only shows up when you try to release. Our post on whether AI music videos are allowed on YouTube and TikTok covers what happens when a distributor registers a track with Content ID.

Can you use songs made before you subscribed?

Suno's help page ties ownership to when you made the song: "If you make songs while subscribed to the Pro or Premier plan, you own the songs." The page does not say what happens to songs made on the free plan if you subscribe later. We could not find that answered on the pages we read, so we are not going to guess. If you have free-plan songs you intend to monetize, ask Suno support in writing and keep the answer.

What happens if you cancel, and can you use remixes?

Suno's terms say commercial rights for a Download you have obtained are perpetual and are not affected by your running out of allowance, later changes to pricing, or the expiry, cancellation, downgrade or suspension of your subscription. After cancelling, new downloads follow free-tier limits.

Remixes are the exception that catches people. If you turn on features that let others remix your Outputs, the terms treat a Remix as a joint work, and any Remix may only be used for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes "regardless of your subscription tier". If the version people share is someone else's remix of your song, the terms say that remix may only be used non-commercially.

A checklist before you build a video on a Suno song

  1. Was the song made while you were on Pro or Premier? If not, stop and ask Suno.
  2. Do you hold the file from a permitted download, not a recording?
  3. Is it the original Output rather than a Remix?
  4. Have you left Suno's watermark and metadata alone?
  5. If you will distribute to Spotify, have you checked your distributor's rules on AI-generated tracks? See how to post your Suno song to YouTube, TikTok and Spotify.

If all five are yes, the next job is the picture. The full workflow is in the Suno music video guide, and the shorter tool page is the Suno AI music video generator. The brief for your video is free in Melodious; rendering takes a plan, so settle the rights question first and you will not pay to render a video you cannot publish. Plans and credits are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I monetize a Suno song on YouTube if I made it on the free plan?

Not under Suno's terms. For free or Basic users, the terms say you will only use Outputs for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes, and Suno's help page says that on the Basic plan Suno is the owner of the songs. Monetizing a video that uses the song would, on our reading, be commercial use. The help page does not say what happens if you subscribe afterwards, so if you have free-plan songs you care about, ask Suno support before relying on them.

Does a Pro or Premier plan cover every song I download?

It covers songs you obtain through a permitted download in line with your tier's monthly allowance. Suno's terms say you may not commercially exploit Output that you have not downloaded through an approved channel, and that recording or stream ripping are prohibited. A song you only played or shared inside Suno, never downloaded, is not covered.

What happens to my rights if I cancel Pro?

Suno's terms say the commercial use rights for a Download you have obtained are perpetual and are not affected by cancelling, downgrading or suspending your subscription. Suno's September 2026 FAQ adds that your library stays playable and shareable after you cancel, and that new downloads then follow free-tier limits.

Can I use a Suno Remix commercially?

No. The terms say a Remix may only be used for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes regardless of your subscription tier, and that nothing in the permitted commercial use section permits commercial use of any Remix.

Does owning the song mean it is copyrighted?

Not necessarily. Suno's terms say Suno makes no representation that any copyright will vest in an Output, and its help page says music made entirely with AI would not qualify for copyright protection in the US because a human did not write the lyrics or the music. It also says that if you wrote the lyrics, you own them and may be able to register them. Ownership and copyright are different questions.

Do I need a Suno plan to put the video I make with Melodious online?

The video is one question and the song is another. Melodious makes the pictures; the rights to the audio you upload are set by whoever supplied it, which for a Suno song is Suno's terms. If you plan to monetize or distribute, check the plan and download rules above before you spend credits on a render.

Rights sorted? Give the song a picture.

Upload the download you are entitled to use, brief the video for free, and see the storyboard before you pay to render.
