Spotify Canvas Not Working? Sort the Artist Causes From the Listener Ones
If a Spotify Canvas is not working, first decide whose side the fault is on. Start by asking whose problem it is
Most troubleshooting posts on this hand you a flat list of ten fixes and let you work through it. That wastes your time, because the list contains two completely different kinds of problem and the diagnostic that separates them takes half a minute.
Ask one question: does the Canvas appear for anyone else?
- Open the track in the Spotify mobile app on a second phone, or ask one other person to.
- If the Canvas plays there, nothing is wrong with the upload. Every artist-side fix below is irrelevant — you are looking at a setting on one device.
- If it plays for nobody, the fault is on the upload, and no amount of toggling settings will surface it.
Almost every drawn-out Canvas problem we have seen is someone applying listener-side fixes to an artist-side fault, or the reverse.

Listener-side causes
These are the ones the person watching controls. An artist cannot fix any of them remotely, which is worth knowing before you spend an evening re-exporting a file.
Canvas plays only in the mobile app. Spotify says so directly: "Canvas plays only in the Spotify mobile app" (Spotify for Artists). The desktop client and the web player show the static cover art. This is not a bug and it is the most common false alarm of the lot — an artist uploads, checks on a laptop, sees album art, and concludes the upload failed.
Data Saver is on. Spotify's fix is to go to Settings, then "Data-saving and offline", and set "Data Saver" to Off. This one hides every Canvas in the app, which makes it easy to spot: if a listener sees no Canvas on any track by any artist, look here first.
The Videos and Canvas setting is off. Spotify's video settings page documents three separate toggles — music videos, other videos, and Canvas, described as "Short, looping visuals when a song is playing". On mobile the path is profile picture, then "Settings and privacy", then "Content and display", then the "Videos and Canvas" section; on the web player it is profile picture, then "Settings", then the same section (Spotify Support).
One detail here catches people out. Spotify states these settings "turn on or off video and Canvas across all platforms and devices where the account is used." So a listener who switched Canvas off months ago on a tablet has switched it off on their phone too, and will not remember doing it.
The OS is too old. Spotify lists iOS 12 or later and Android 6.0 or later as the requirement. This is a genuinely small population, but it is a real one, and it is the answer when a single older device is the only holdout.
Canvas is not available in that country. Spotify publishes a country-by-country availability list, and Canvas is limited to the countries on it (Spotify for Artists). If a Canvas works for you and not for a listener abroad, this is the likely explanation and there is nothing either of you can do about it.

Artist-side causes
These are the ones you can actually do something about.
It was never added to that track. Canvas is added to one track at a time, not to a release. In Spotify for Artists the flow is: open the Music section, select the track, then "Add Canvas" (Spotify for Artists). A ten-track album needs ten uploads. A missing Canvas on track seven is usually a missing upload on track seven.
You do not have permission on that account. Spotify limits who can add one: the first main artist on the track, or a main artist on both the track and the release, with an account role of Admin or Editor. If the Add Canvas control is not there, the file is not your problem — the permissions are.
You uploaded to a version you do not own. Spotify's wording is exact: "If you have split rights to a track, you can add Canvas only to versions you own" (Spotify for Artists, checked 5 September 2026). So you may have successfully attached a Canvas to a version nobody is listening to. Check which version the streams are actually going to.
The file does not meet the spec. The two constraints that bite hardest are format and length: Canvas accepts only MP4 or JPG, so a WebM export from a browser tool is rejected outright, and it caps at 8 seconds, so a 10-second clip is too (Canvas guidelines). It was removed for content policy. Spotify's Canvas content policy states that "Canvases that do not comply with the Spotify Platform Rules will be removed", and separately that "We might remove your Canvas if it's used for overly promotional purposes" — the examples given include directing people to websites or URLs and ticket vendors, promoting brands or products or discounted deals, and encouraging entry to contests (Canvas content policy). A Canvas that went live and later vanished, with no change on your end, is the shape of this one.
Where we would push back on the standard advice
Every other page on this query opens with "restart the app" and "reinstall Spotify". Reinstalling does occasionally work, but as advice it is close to useless, because it teaches you nothing about which of the causes above you had — and it will not survive the next time, since the setting that caused it is stored on the account and comes straight back after the reinstall.
The two-phone test is better in every respect: it takes thirty seconds, it eliminates half the list outright, and it tells you whether to open Spotify for Artists or the listener's settings. Do that first and reinstall last.
If you have no Canvas to fix
Sometimes the honest diagnosis is that there is nothing in the slot, and no amount of troubleshooting produces a file that was never made.
That is a smaller problem than it sounds. Eight seconds is too short to establish a subject but ample to establish a mood, so the slot rewards atmosphere over narrative — which is the cheap end of the production scale, not the expensive one. Treat free-versus-Premium as a myth unless Spotify documents otherwise.
How long does a Spotify Canvas take to appear after uploading?
Spotify does not publish a processing time, so we will not invent one. What we can tell you is how to check: open the track in the Spotify mobile app on a device with Data Saver off and Canvas enabled. Can Spotify remove a Canvas I have already uploaded?
